Hello dear friend,
In one of the calls with my 100-day challenge community, a writer asked me if I could help them with a winning strategy for Medium.
This got me thinking: what’s a winning strategy? Surely, there can’t be a one-size-fits-all solution for every writer to succeed?
That’s why, I broke it down to the basics.
When we want a strategy, what do we start with? We start with a reason, the key driver, the pot of gold at the rainbow’s end.
And today, I want to share in brief with you what I told my community of writers: How to build a winning strategy for yourself on Medium?
Step one: Define your goals
Know why you’re writing. This will make the steps ahead easier. As Nietzsche said,
“He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.”
Step two: Know who you’re writing for
Choose 1–2 niches that align with your expertise or interests.
Understand your audience.
What are their problems or struggles that you can solve?
What kind of content do they already engage with?
What are their goals and how can your content help them?
Brainstorm ideas on how you can create content your target audience can easily find and benefit from.
Step three: Build a strategy that works for you
Build a Weekly Plan.
It can look something like this, so you don’t overwhelm yourself by doing everything at once.
Monday: Research and outline.
Tuesday-Wednesday: Write the draft.
Thursday: Edit and proofread.
Friday: Publish and promote.
Feel free to follow this or modify it as per your convenience, but have some structure in your writing hours that works for you.
Step four: Schedule consistency
Consistency doesn’t mean every day but create a publishing schedule you can follow to make the most of online platforms and an already active audience.
For me, consistency is publishing at least 12–15 articles every month.
You can start with a manageable frequency, such as one article per week, and scale up as you get comfortable. Regular publishing builds trust with readers and the platform’s algorithm. You need both to make it big as an online creator.
Showing up consistently is as important as offering value, improving the content quality, and finding your voice as a writer.
Writing every day works only if you have a system to track your progress, improve your process, and set reasonable goals.
All it takes is a little planning, a lot of hard work, and consistent reflection on your stats to understand your audience’s interest, so you can offer them exactly what they’re looking for.
It might seem like a lot of work, but this is what it takes to grow as a creator, and there’s no shortcut to it. The good news is it’ll pay off in the long run.
