Hello dear friend,
The Medium Day 2023 speaking experience was a bundle of contradictions.
First, let me start with the good:
The event had almost 20k attendees, which makes it the biggest virtual event I've spoken in.
My talk had 42 peak listeners and 128 total live attendees.
I was super excited to present a topic close to my heart (How to balance privacy and authenticity while writing deeply personal stories).
But it wasn't all a rosy experience.
I had a flight 30 minutes after the talk, so I had to conduct the session from the airport.
With random strangers staring at me, it was difficult to channel my inner confidence.
The Airport wifi was glitching, and my video got disconnected once during the talk.
The result?
I wasn't at my best.
But from all my time as an online creator, the biggest lesson I've learned is that showing up trumps everything else.
And I'm glad I showed up and completed my talk, even though I know it could have been better in multiple ways.
The best part?
I got so much unexpected love from strangers all over the world. From lovely Tweets to articles on Medium listing takeaways from my talk, I'm just overwhelmed by this outpouring of positivity.
A heartfelt thanks to Tony Stubblebine, Ariel Meadow Stallings, Buster Benson, and team Medium for organizing such an awesome event. All my love to you. 🤗
